As many of you know, our family loves beaches. Takapuna beach is a short 5 minute walk from our place. It comes complete with views of Rangitoto island, an inactive volcano, and plenty of shells to keep the girls busy. It's a calm, east coast beach, and was the first beach we hit in NZ given the proximity. But I was pretty anxious to hit the big surf beaches on the west coast, about 45 min away. So today we went to Muriwai beach, an amazing black and gold sandy beach. The black color is from all the iron/minerals. It creates amazing colors, and gets HOT, with the sunlight. I took a lesson with the surf school and had a blast ripping the smaller beginner waves. I'm pretty happy, not even 3 days in NZ before getting out surfing! (the hospital is virtually shut down for summer holidays until next week, so we are taking full advantage of my time off ... as usual). Tomorrow I'm hoping to get out kiteboarding since there's a big kite/windsurf destination just down the road. I love this place. Ella and Zaiah are loving it too. Elle's a real beach bum. Our last day in Fiji she said "can we stay here?... I don't want to go home". Today she said "can we stay here a thousand days?". Funny she never felt that way about our move to London?!?
